For shaded, damp gardens, composite decking is usually the better choice. It is water and rot proof and resists mould and algae, so it stays safer underfoot and needs very little upkeep. Timber and hardwood are beautiful options too, but they need regular maintenance to stay at their best in our climate.
Good-quality composite decking is designed to be slip-aware, and because it resists the algae that makes timber slippery in the damp, it tends to stay safer over time. We will recommend a suitable surface for shaded or coastal gardens.
It depends on the material and the build. A well-built composite deck can last for many years with almost no maintenance, while timber and hardwood decks last well too when looked after. The framework and drainage beneath the surface are just as important as the boards on top.
